In June 2005, I adopted Louie from Avalon Animal Rescue who rescued him as a stray to become a therapy dog and work with adolescent boys. In September 2005, Louie began acting strangely by jumping up from his mat, climbing into my lap, smelling my mouth and licking my chin. He continued to do this at least once a day, sometimes twice; and I noticed that afterwards I didn't feel well. I discussed this with my doctor, was tested and diagnosed with diabetes. Louie became my service dog and has been with me for four year now. He goes everywhere with me. He indicates when my blood sugar is low even before I feel the effects so I can get something to eat.

Fluffy Orange is just that, he's fluffy and orange. I never gave him a name, because I didn't plan on keeping him. He was dropped-off at a farm. He was flea infested and starving. I brought him home. He's a trouble maker. He's a character, but I love him. He's fluffy and orange, that's all.

Lucky Sue came to me when I worked as a vet tech at a local veterinarian clinic. A concerned citizen brought in this tiny crying pup which she found in a dumpster. The citizen said she heard the pup crying and dug it out among the debris and I was fortunate enough to be the first tech to handle the poor puppy. This tiny creature had a temperature in the 80's which did not leave much room for hope of survival. Quickly we wrapped her in warm towels, applied a heating pad and fixed a bottle for her. Already I knew she would be mine.
If Lucky survived the night, her prognoses would improve. As a newborn, she was with me almost every minute of the day and would get a bottle (sometimes three) during the night. As the days passed, it became clear that she was a fighter and very much wanted to survive. During her vaccination schedule, Lucky Sue became ill with parvo. I worried that after all of this, after she stole my heart, would she have the immune system necessary to combat parvo? It has been about two and a half years since her illness and she is now a 45 pound bundle of fun and energy! Besides being a survivor, Lucky Sue has shown me love with no strings attached.
